Overview

Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kg Baru, nestled in the heart of Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, stands as a beacon for those seeking an authentic Malaysian culinary experience. This restaurant specializes in the iconic nasi lemak, a dish that embodies Malaysia’s rich food heritage through its fragrant coconut rice, spicy sambal, and a range of savory accompaniments.

The highlights here are the Nasi Lemak Paru and Nasi Lemak Sotong, both celebrated for their generous portions and well-balanced flavors. The Paru offers a satisfying crunch paired with bold spices, while the Sotong delivers a tender, rich seafood taste that complements the traditional sambal. Other standout dishes include the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang, which features tender chicken infused with complex rendang spices, and the Nasi Lemak Berlauk Wanjo, a more elaborate serving catering to those with hearty appetites.

The venue itself is spacious and clean, providing ample seating for families, locals, and tourists alike. Kampung Baru’s traditional village setting enriches the dining atmosphere with a cultural backdrop that mirrors the meal’s authenticity. While the presence of flies has been noted occasionally, the lively and bustling environment fosters a communal feel, making it a favored brunch spot and popular lunch destination in the city.

Complementing the food selection is an array of traditional beverages. The mango shake stands out as a refreshing companion to the rich dishes, offering a sweet and cooling contrast. Other beverages like Teh AIS, Milo AIS, Iced Lemon Tea, and the distinctive Sirap Bandung add further variety, appealing to diverse tastes seeking both familiarity and local flair.

Nasi Lemak Wanjo successfully caters to a broad audience — from locals craving a nostalgic meal to tourists eager to indulge in Malaysia’s culinary signature. The fast-moving queues reflect consistent demand, while the reasonable self-service model, including free water and a modest charge for air-conditioned seating, ensures accessibility for many visitors.

Although some feedback mentions a strong dried fish aroma in certain dishes and variations in sambal spiciness, these elements are part of the authentic Southeast Asian flavor profile that defines the experience here. Overall, Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kg Baru is a worthy destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Malaysia’s vibrant food culture in a welcoming, culturally rich environment.

Absolutely loved this place! The queue moves fast and it’s 100% worth the wait. The nasi lemak is bursting with flavour – fragrant rice, rich sambal, crispy fried chicken, and all the classic toppings done just right. Everything was fresh and full of taste. Make sure to grab a mango smoothie from the little stall at the entrance – sweet, cold, and the perfect refreshment alongside the food! The atmosphere is lively, with a mix of locals and tourists all digging into plates of goodness. A must-visit in KL if you want a true Malaysian food experience!

Another delicious Malaysian restaurant is Nasi Lemak Wanjo, perfect for brunch. - The restaurant is big, spacious, and clean. A little concerned that there are flies flying around occasionally. - The menu is quite extensive, for me the recommended one is beef (rendang) with delicious spices. - An alternative to tea, there is sirap bandung which is also delicious. - This restaurant is located in a traditional village, the ambiance really elevates local culture. - There are several parking lots, just choose the closest one.

Came here for weekday lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of dishes available like Fried chicken, sotong, beef, cockles, and more. The nasi lemak was solid, I’d rate it 8/10: fluffy rice, flavorful chicken, and sambal that’s on the spicier side (a bit too much for my preference, but chili lovers will enjoy it). Drinks are self-service with free water provided. Do note that if you choose to dine in the air-conditioned hall, there’s an additional RM1 charge per person.

*The food at this hotel leans more toward Southeast Asian, Chinese, or Indonesian flavors, which may not fully align with the taste preferences of those seeking authentic South Indian, North Indian, or Pakistani cuisine. That said, the quality is decent and offers value for money. One area for improvement is the strong dried fish aroma in certain dishes, which might be off-putting to some diners. Overall, it’s a good option for those who enjoy the aforementioned regional flavors.*

The portion size is definitely generous, so you won’t leave hungry. The sambal is decent, and the sides are filling, but the overall taste doesn’t quite live up to the hype. Not bad at all, just not the best I’ve had.

Very cheap tasty food, extremely popular with locals. Staff all seem very friendly and smiley, can sit in an air conditioned room for 1RM if its hot out (probably is) Also situated in an interesting neighbourhood. Sweet and sour chicken is the best, followed by fried chicken. Rendang is also very tasty. Recommend the potato also! (On top right)

Located in the middle of Kg Baru, KL with KLCC Twin Tower view. Makan nasi lemak sambil ambil suasana kampung di tengah bandar. Have a lot of variety of lauk for nasi lemak. I got ayam goreng and begedil which is so good. The potion is quite big for one person. I share with my 2-years old daughter. Parking lot is provided near the area. The lorong has a lot of kedai that you can choose from. I came around 9.30AM on Saturday, it is not really crowded. Places to sit also a lot. Recommended to dine in here and try the famous nasi lemak.

- Famous & delicious nasi lemak in the heart of KL. - Very popular dinner spot amongst the locals & tourists alike. - Good choices of dishes to accompany the rice. - The sambal is nice but a little sweet to my taste. - There is air-conditioned dining area, but MYR1 is charged per person. - Clean on-site wet toilets. - There is on-site prayer room. - Accept payments via QR pay, credit cards & cash.
